The impressive bay of La Herradura, which in recent years has become an important area for underwater activities. The Andalusian, Spanish and European underwater photography championships have been held in its waters. It is located between Punta de la Mona to the east and the Peñón de Cerro Gordo to the west. The 2 kilometer long beach is located in a privileged area protected from the east and west winds. It is well known that La Herradura is one of the best diving spots in the entire Mediterranean.
In the area of the Cerro Gordo Natural Park, you can enjoy caves and steep bottoms inhabited by a large number of plant species, as well as a rich variety of marine fauna. The extensive Posidonia meadows stand out. Corals, sponges and a wide variety of fish coexist in its shelter, some of which are brightly colored, such as the maiden fish, or spectacular, such as the sunfish. If you decide to take a boat trip, you will be able to approach places that are not easily accessible and of great beauty. Festivals and events
La Herradura is the ideal environment for celebrating parties and events throughout the year. The Carnivals stand out, with their traditional parade; the Patron Saint Festivities of San José, where the street becomes the best showcase of popular gastronomy and at night the party moves to the premises and bars near the fairgrounds; Las Cruces de Mayo, in which the streets, squares or patios are filled with wonderful altars in honor of the Holy Cross; the Medieval Market in June, when the town is adorned with fabrics and ornaments and stalls are set up to buy typical products of the time;
The night of San Juan, in which the beach fills with people to carry out the ritual of washing their faces in the sea at midnight and burning everything bad in the bonfires; The Festival Noches del Castillo de La Herradura in August, an artistic project consisting of concerts in the gardens attached to the Castle or the Tribute to the Men of the Sea in October, in memory of those who died in the tragic sinking of 25 Spanish warships belonging to the Invincible Armada, one of the largest catastrophes in Spanish naval history.
